Statute overview

About this statute

This Act is called the Cantonments Act, 2006, applies to the whole of India, and comes into force on a date the Central Government appoints by notification. This provision sets election-corrupt-practice rules and Board governance rules, including Board meetings, objections to tax proposals, taxation powers, reporting, inspection, removal, and supersession. This provision covers cantonment property taxation: assessment lists must be prepared and revised, objections heard, transfers and building changes notified, tax paid after demand, and some vacancies or special cases can get remission, exemption, or recovery relief. This provision gives Boards, the Chief Executive Officer, and health officials powers and duties for contracts, sanitation, waste disposal, and disease control in a cantonment. This part requires the Board to provide potable water and manage water and drainage works in a cantonment, while restricting unauthorized connections, misuse of domestic water, and harmful discharges into drains.
