Statute overview

About this statute

This Act sets its title, extends across India, defines key terms, and creates mechanisms for industrial dispute resolution. The provision sets up grievance redressal committees for larger industrial establishments and gives the appropriate Government powers to refer industrial disputes, exempt section 9A in some cases, and publish dispute reports and awards. This section and the following ones govern when awards and settlements take effect, when strikes and lock-outs are allowed, and when lay-off, retrenchment, transfer, and closure rules apply. Employers need prior permission and notice for certain retrenchments and closures, and employees can receive compensation or benefits if permission is refused or not obtained. This part sets limits on court action, protects workers and employers in industrial disputes, and gives governments and labour authorities powers to act.
