Statute overview

About this statute

This part lets the State Government reserve forests, set up the settlement process, and restrict harmful acts in reserved forests. The State Government may create village-forests and protected forests, make rules for their management, and restrict or regulate activities in them. The Collector must publish vernacular translations of certain notifications, and breaches of notifications or rules can lead to imprisonment, fines, or penalties. The State Government may make timber-related rules, and people claiming collected timber must file a written claim within the notice period and may need to pay amounts due before getting possession. This provision lets magistrates and forest officials confiscate, sell, release, arrest, compound, and prosecute forest-related property and offences, with appeal and hearing safeguards. This part gives forest officers and governments certain powers and protections, restricts forest officers from trading in forest produce without written permission, requires some people to help report and prevent forest offences, and sets penalties and recovery rules for breaches.
