Statute overview

About this statute

This provision sets out how land can be declared a reserved forest, how claims are handled, and what activities are banned in reserved forests. The State Government can set up and regulate protected and village forests, issue notifications, and restrict or prohibit certain acts in them. The State Government may make rules about timber and depot matters, and people employed at a depot must help officials during emergencies. The provision lets officials deal with seized forest property, but only after required waiting/hearing steps in some cases, and sets rules for appeals, release, arrest, punishment, compounding, and officer powers. Forest officers are treated as public servants, forest officers cannot trade in timber or forest produce without written permission, and several forest-related acts can trigger penalties or recovery as land revenue.
