Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act’s short title: the Africans on Private Estates Act. The Minister may direct, by Gazette notice, where this Act applies in Malawi, and may later suspend or rescind that application. The Act does not apply to certain Africans occupying estate land under a valid lease or tenancy agreement of at least two years. This section defines key terms used in the Act. Owners must register resident Africans on the estate, give each registered person a prescribed certificate, and keep a separate register for Africans entering under a special agreement. Some residents on an estate may apply to be registered as resident Africans, and applicants must give full family and property details.
