This section gives the Act its short title: Traditional Courts Act. This section defines several terms used in the Act, including “African,” “Chief Traditional Courts Commissioner,” “Traditional Court,” and “member.” The Minister may establish Traditional Courts by warrant, name them, later suspend/cancel/vary warrants, and must publish key particulars in the Gazette. Each Traditional Court must act only within the area and extent set by its warrant. This section sets out how Traditional Courts are made up and what the Minister may do about their composition. The Minister may suspend or dismiss a Traditional Court member for specified reasons, and the notice must be published in the Gazette.
