Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act’s short title: it may be cited as the Bretton Woods Agreement Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including Bank, Bank Agreement, Fund, and Fund Agreement, and gives a special expanded meaning for Fund Agreement in later sections. The Minister, or a person he authorizes in writing, may act for the Government of Malawi to sign, accept, and deposit the specified Fund and Bank Agreement instruments and amendments. The Minister may create certain notes or obligations, raise loans, and borrow for payments under this section; the Fund and Bank agreements are given the force of law, but several customs/tax exemptions are limited. The Reserve Bank of Malawi is made the depository for the Fund and the Bank, and it is authorized to handle special drawing rights and related payments on Malawi’s behalf.
