Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: the Monuments and Relics Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including “Chief Antiquities Officer,” “conservation,” “Council,” “excavation,” “listed monument,” and “local authority.” An officer called the Chief Antiquities Officer is to be appointed in the public service, along with subordinate officers, and they are responsible for administering the Act under the Minister’s directions. The Chief Antiquities Officer must carry out listed heritage-management tasks, subject to the Act and any directions from the Minister. This provision creates the Monuments and Relics Advisory Council, sets out who sits on it, requires the Minister to choose a Chairman, and gives appointed members a two-year term unless earlier ended.
