About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: the General Amnesty Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including “act,” “Committee,” and “returnee,” unless the context otherwise requires. Certain people covered by section 4 acts are granted general amnesty and cannot be prosecuted, detained, or arrested on that basis. This Act applies to acts done for political, reform, religious, or political-conviction purposes, even if the act is not an offence under another written law. People already under arrest or serving prison terms for covered acts at the Act’s commencement must be released or get remission of the remaining sentence.
