About this statute

This section says the Act may be cited as the Labour Relations Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act and says the Act should be read to give effect to the Constitution and international labour treaty obligations. It also says any contractual term that restricts a right recognized by the Act is void. This Act applies to the private sector and the Government, including public authorities and enterprises. It does not apply to the armed forces, prison service, or police, except where they are employed in a civilian capacity. Every person has the right to freedom of association, including the freedom to establish and join organizations of their choice. Every organization has the right to manage its own internal rules, officers, administration, activities, programmes, and memberships in trade union or employers’ federations and international organizations.
