Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act’s short title: the Water Resources Act. This section defines many terms used in the Act, including Authority, authorized person, water, watercourse, water right, and domestic use. The Minister may publish a notice in the Gazette to declare that part of the Act does not apply to a defined area. This section states the Act’s objectives: to manage and use Malawi’s water resources rationally, support orderly development and use of water resources, and control pollution affecting water, the environment, and human health. All water resources are vested in the State, but this is subject to any user rights granted by this Act or other written law.
