About this statute

This Act may be cited as the National Statistics Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including authorized officer, census, Commissioner, National Statistical System, official statistics, respondent, return, statistical sample survey, statistics, survey, and undertakings. The National Statistical Office is established as a Government Department and must serve as the central depository for all official statistics produced in Malawi. A Commissioner for Statistics must be appointed by the President, and the Commissioner is responsible for administering and controlling the National Statistical Office. The Commissioner for Statistics must advise the Minister and carry out a wide range of duties on statistical matters, including standards, publication, coordination, confidentiality, and pricing.
