About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title and says it starts on a date appointed by the Minister, by notice in the Gazette. This section defines “Commission” and “Referendum Committee” for the Act unless the context requires otherwise. The President must proclaim a referendum by Gazette order in some cases, and may do so in the public interest in other cases. A referendum question must be framed so each voter can answer by marking YES or NO, or a symbol for YES or NO, on the ballot paper. A referendum must not be held on matters involving national defence, security and intelligence, budget and taxation policy, political amnesty, or declaring or ending a state of emergency.
