Statute overview

About this statute

Each State Party must not carry out nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions, and must prohibit, prevent, and refrain from helping them. This article creates the Organization and sets out basic rules on membership, cooperation, confidentiality, verification, and funding. The Conference may meet as a Review Conference and has set rules for sessions, voting, quorum, and review procedures. The Conference must take measures to ensure treaty compliance and fix violations; it can also restrict or suspend a State Party’s rights, recommend collective measures, or refer an urgent issue to the United Nations. Article VII sets the procedure for proposing, reviewing, adopting, and entering into force of amendments and certain technical changes.
