Statute overview

About this statute

States parties to the Protocol must apply the referenced Convention provision under the Protocol, unless it has been extended under the cited Convention clause. States Parties must cooperate with UNHCR (or its successor) and provide requested information and statistics in the appropriate form. States Parties must send the UN Secretary-General the text of any laws and regulations they adopt to apply the Protocol. Disputes between States Parties about interpreting or applying the Protocol that cannot be resolved another way must be referred to the International Court of Justice at the request of any party. This article says which States may accede to the Protocol and that accession is done by depositing an instrument with the UN Secretary-General.
