Purpose and legislative effect
“This article defines “remuneration” and “equal remuneration” for men and women workers.”
This article defines “remuneration” and “equal remuneration” for men and women workers. Each Member must promote and, where consistent with its wage-setting methods, ensure equal pay for men and women workers for work of equal value. Authorities or collective-agreement parties may decide the methods used to objectively appraise jobs; pay differences based on that appraisal and unrelated to sex are not treated as contrary to equal remuneration for work of equal value. Each Member must cooperate, as appropriate, with the concerned employers’ and workers’ organisations to give effect to the Convention’s provisions. Formal ratifications must be communicated to the Director-General of the International Labour Office for registration.
