Purpose and legislative effect

“This article says the law sets out the rights, obligations, organization, and functioning of media in Rwanda for the general interest.”

This article says the law sets out the rights, obligations, organization, and functioning of media in Rwanda for the general interest. This article defines key terms used in the law on journalism and media. Certain journalists are to be accredited by the Media Self Regulatory Body or, for foreign-media cases, by a competent public organ. Media conduct is regulated by the Media Self Regulatory Body, while the national statutory regulator also regulates audio, audio-visual media, and internet media. Journalists must inform, educate the population, promote leisure activities, and defend freedom of information while analyzing and commenting on information.

A journalist may consult a competent resource person when working, and is not liable for the person’s comments if they are reported verbatim.

Certain journalists are to be accredited by the Media Self Regulatory Body or, for foreign-media cases, by a competent public organ.
