About this statute

Each Member must pursue a national policy to abolish child labour and gradually raise the minimum age for work. Ratifying Members must declare a minimum age for admission to employment or work in their territory and on registered transport, and may use the listed lower substitute ages in the stated circumstances. Covered employment or work for young persons must generally have a minimum age of 18, with a limited possibility to allow work from age 16 if specific protections and training are in place. The competent authority may exclude limited categories of work from the Convention if needed, after consulting employers’ and workers’ organisations, but work covered by Article 3 cannot be excluded.
