Statute overview

About this statute

The Convention’s objective is to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants. This article defines key terms used in the Convention, including “Party,” “Regional organization,” and “Parties present and voting.” Each Party must ban or control certain chemicals, limit imports and exports of listed chemicals, and allow observer participation at Conference meetings under set conditions. Parties must manage listed chemicals, stockpiles, wastes, and contaminated sites in environmentally sound ways, and the exporting Party must send the certification to the Secretariat within 60 days of receipt. This article creates a public register for specific exemptions, kept by the Secretariat, and sets rules for registering, reviewing, extending, and withdrawing entries.
