This Law governs foundations. This law applies to foundations established in Rwanda or abroad that are registered under this law. This article defines key terms used in the law on foundations. A foundation is described as having four characteristics: separate legal personality, charitable or non-charitable objectives, legally separate property, and a beneficiary or beneficiaries named in its charter. This article classifies foundations into private-benefit, common-benefit, and mixed-benefit types.

This Law governs foundations.

Section 1

Ingaruka zo kwagurira

A foreign foundation that extends activities or re-domiciles in Rwanda keeps its property, existing rights and obligations, penalties, and pending proceedings unaffected.

Section 22

Refusal of a beneficiary’s

The foundation council may refuse to give a beneficiary information or disclose other information in certain abusive, dishonest, or conflict-of-interest situations, and for important reasons to protect the beneficiary.

Section 43

Gusesa

The foundation council may unanimously decide to dissolve a foundation if one of the listed grounds applies, and it must notify the Registrar of the dissolution decision.
