Statute overview

About this statute

This provision creates the Rwanda Food and Medicines Authority (RFMA) and says its mission, organization, and functioning are set by the law. This article defines key terms used in the Law, including food products, quality of food products, and regulation of food and pharmaceutical products. RFMA’s head office must be in Kigali City, and it may be moved elsewhere in Rwanda if necessary. RFMA may also set up branches elsewhere in the country with approval by a Prime Minister’s Order. RFMA must inspect food and pharmaceutical products and oversee their safety, compliance, registration, and related licensing. A Prime Minister’s Order determines RFMA’s supervising authority and category. A performance contract must be made between the supervising authority and RFMA’s decision-making organ, and it lasts for the decision-making organ members’ term of office.
