Statute overview

About this statute

This law governs the management of forests, trees and shrubs, and their products. This article defines key forest-law terms such as buffer zone, protected trees, protected forest, permit, and competent authority. The Ministry must set up a forest planting programme every year, and the Authority must identify land and forests needing afforestation or protection work with the City of Kigali or the District. Trees must be planted on agricultural and livestock land, and also in certain urban, public, road, and conservation areas; the Authority may set regulations on tree species, planting areas, and management. Forest conservation and protection are aimed at economic, environmental, climate, tourism, and research objectives, and other grounds may be set by the Minister.
