Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: the Immigration Act. This section says the Act applies to Tanzania Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania, but generally does not apply to citizens of Tanzania except for specified immigration-related exceptions. The Minister may make regulations exempting certain non-citizens, and those regulations can carry penalties. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including alien immigrant, Board, Commissioner General, Department, passport, visa, and work permit. This section establishes the Tanzania Immigration Services Department in the Ministry and gives the Minister power to make regulations about immigration officers’ rights and privileges. The President appoints the Commissioner General of the Department, and that person is the Department’s chief executive officer.
