About this statute

This section gives the Act’s short title, says it applies to Mainland Tanzania and Tanzania Zanzibar, and defines key terms used in the Act. The President may order a person’s detention if satisfied the person is dangerous to peace and good order or is acting against the defence or security of the State. A detained person may petition the High Court to challenge the legality of the detention order. A detention order may be executed anywhere within the United Republic, using the same manner provided for executing warrants of arrest under the Criminal Procedure Act. An order under this Act authorizes police to arrest the person it concerns and police or prison officers to detain that person as a civil prisoner; the President may also make regulations about how such detainees are treated and visited.
