Statute overview

About this statute

This provision gives the Act its short title: the Land Disputes Courts Act. This section defines terms used in the Act, including assessor, Minister, registrar, and land. Land disputes or complaints must be filed in the court with jurisdiction for the area, subject to the listed Land Act and Village Land Act provisions. Magistrates’ courts generally cannot hear civil matters under the Land Act or Village Land Act, unless the Land Act says otherwise, but they can hear criminal proceedings under those Acts. The Village Land Council must have seven members, including three women. Each member must be nominated by the Village Council and approved by the Village Assembly.
