About this statute

This section provides definitions of key terms used in the Act (for example: "authorised officer", "commissioner", "petroleum", "development area", "drilling"). Petroleum in its natural condition on or under land in Uganda is vested in the Government; no person may carry out exploration or development of petroleum on Ugandan land except under and in accordance with a licence issued under this Act. The Government may enter into an agreement with any person, provided it is not inconsistent with this Act, concerning licences, licensing conditions, contractors' exploration or development operations and production-sharing arrangements, the exercise of discretion by the Minister or commissioner, and related incidental matters. Sets application, notification, and issuance procedures for licences: applicants must apply in prescribed form; the Minister must notify applicants of decisions and may require security or information; if an applicant accepts conditions in writing within sixty days the Minister must issue the licence; multiple holders are jointly and severally liable. The Act states that, for its purposes, the surface of the earth is to be treated as divided into graticular sections as set out in the First Schedule.
