About this statute

Sets which persons and categories the Act applies to and lists exclusions and regulatory powers for the Minister to modify application by regulation. This section provides a series of definitions (interpretation) of terms used in the Act. Clauses in agreements or contracts of service are void if they prevent any person from relying on provisions of this Act to the detriment of the employee, from presenting complaints to a labour officer, from initiating/enforcing proceedings under the Act, or from giving evidence—unless the clause is an approved written settlement agreement. No person shall use or assist another person to use forced or compulsory labour. Requires parties (including the Minister, labour officers and the Industrial Court) to promote equality of opportunity; requires employers to pay men and women equal remuneration for work of equal value; allows the Minister to limit jobs for migrant workers by regulation.
