About this statute

"Petroleum" is defined broadly to include inflammable liquids from various bituminous sources; the Minister may, by statutory instrument, apply provisions of the Act to other substances with modifications the Minister considers desirable. Petroleum may only be imported, unloaded, landed, loaded, transhipped, transported or kept in accordance with rules made under this Act. The Minister may make rules about petroleum, including defining classes, regulating use and possession, licensing importation and storage, testing and sampling, fees, appointments of officers, safety and transport conditions, inquiries into accidents, and other incidental matters. An occupier who keeps petroleum in contravention of rules made under this Act commits an offence and, on conviction, is liable to a fine (not exceeding five hundred shillings per day) and the court may order forfeiture or other disposal of the petroleum and its vessel. Licence-holders must not contravene any licence condition; contravention is an offence punishable by a fine up to five hundred shillings for each day the contravention continues.
