Section 45-57A-62.17 Disability Determination.

When any firefighter or policeman is confined to his or her bed or is under the care of a physician for 15 days or more by reason of sickness or other disability not otherwise provided for, he or she shall be paid weekly, but not for more than 12 weeks, from the fund, the sum of twenty-five dollars ($25); however, if the policeman or firefighter has been in the service of the department of which he or she is a member for a period of 10 years or more and the board determines at the end of 12 weeks that his or her disability is permanent, he or she shall be retired and paid in accordance with Section 45–57A–62.16. But no firefighter or policeman shall be paid any benefits or relief under this section if his or her sickness or disability was caused by dissipation, immoral conduct, or vicious habits, or if during the time of his or her disability he or she receives his or her regular compensation from the city.
