Lauderdale County Board of Education members receive set monthly and meeting-based compensation, with a cap on paid meetings and a later change that converts one allowance into salary.
(a)(1) Each member of the Lauderdale County Board of Education shall receive an expense allowance of two hundred dollars ($200) per month which shall be paid out of the Lauderdale County General School Fund and which shall be in addition to any and all other compensation, expenses, and allowances provided for by law. (2)a. Each member of the Lauderdale County Board of Education shall be entitled to an additional expense allowance of seven hundred dollars ($700) per month which shall be paid out of the Lauderdale County General School Fund and which shall be in addition to any and all other compensation, expenses, salary, and allowances provided for by law. b. Beginning when the next term of office of a board member commences after September 1, 2023, the additional expense allowance provided for in paragraph a. shall be converted to a salary for all members of the board. (b)(1) The members of the County Board of Education of Lauderdale County shall each receive from the public school funds of the county twenty-five dollars ($25) for each meeting attended, three hundred dollars ($300) per month, and their actual traveling and hotel expenses incurred in attending meetings of the board and transacting the business of the board. The members of the board shall not be paid for attending more than 24 meetings in any one year. Their compensation and expenses shall be paid in like manner as provided for the payment of the compensation of teachers. The compensation and expenses provided herein and the expense allowance provided in subsection (a), shall be the total compensation paid the members and shall be in lieu of all other compensation provided by law. (2) The provisions of this subsection are curative and remedial and shall have retroactive effect to November 1, 1984, and any actions taken or payments made in accordance with this subsection since that date are hereby ratified, validated, and confirmed. (c) The President of the Lauderdale County Board of Education shall be elected annually from the membership of the board at the first meeting of the board in November after newly elected members have assumed office. Commencing with the election of the next president of the board after September 1, 2023, the president shall receive an additional five hundred dollars ($500) per month while serving as president.
