Some Lafayette police officers age 35 or older can join the city police pension and relief fund if they apply by the stated deadline and provide required information.
§3555. City of Lafayette; eligibility to participate in fund Notwithstanding any other provision of the law to the contrary and particularly the provisions of R.S. 11:3520, any person employed as a police officer by the city of Lafayette after attaining the age of thirty-five years shall be eligible for membership in the police pension and relief fund of the city of Lafayette in the same manner and to the same extent as if such person or persons had not attained the age of thirty-five years at the time of employment. Such memberships shall be conditioned upon the filing of an application therefor with the board of trustees of the fund on or before August 1, 1970, together with such information as the board shall require. Any such person who shall be eligible to receive credit in the system for all service rendered as an employee of the police department of the city of Lafayette prior to the date on which he becomes a member in accordance with the provisions of this Section. In order to obtain such credit the member shall make application therefor and shall pay into the fund employee contributions at the current rate on all compensation earned during the period for which credit is claimed, plus two percent per annum interest thereon, provided that said contributions may be paid in one lump sum or in such installments as shall be agreed upon between the board of trustees and the applicant for membership, provided that all of such installments shall be paid on or before the date on which application for retirement is made.
