§156. Alteration, defacing, destruction, or removal of records Except as provided by law, no registrar, deputy, or employee of a registrar, or any person having access to or the right of inspection, copying, or photographing of any book, card, record, or other document pertaining to the registration of voters, shall alter, add to, deface, or destroy any such document, or remove it from the custody of the registrar. However, nothing in this Section prevents a competent court from requiring the registrar to produce in court, in any proceeding pending therein, any document, book, card, or record which the court believes to be necessary and material to the determination of the proceeding. However, such documents shall not become permanent records of the court, but shall be returned to the custody of the registrar immediately after inspection by the court. The court may require a photostatic copy thereof to be placed in the record. Acts 1976, No. 697, §1, eff. Jan. 1, 1978.
