Some farm vehicles are exempt from Louisiana braking requirements, but certain newer, heavier farm trailers and semi-trailers must meet those braking rules.
§341.1. Exemptions; farm vehicles and equipment A. Any farm trailer, farm semi-trailer, rubber-tired farm wagon or cart, drawn rubber-tired farm equipment, or implement of husbandry manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1973 and operated or moved only incidentally on the highways of this state shall be exempt from the braking requirements imposed by the State of Louisiana, including more particularly but not exclusively those requirements set forth in this subpart, provided its gross weight does not exceed ten thousand pounds or when the speed of such vehicle does not exceed thirty miles per hour. The exemption for farm vehicles described herein shall apply only to those vehicles used exclusively in transporting farm produce, livestock, farm supplies and implements of husbandry. B. All farm trailers or farm semi-trailers of a gross weight exceeding three thousand pounds manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1973, and used on the highways of this state shall be required to meet the braking requirements imposed by the state of Louisiana. Any rubber-tired farm wagon or cart, drawn rubber-tired farm equipment, or implement of husbandry, manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1973, and designed primarily for field use, and operated or moved only incidentally on the highways of this state, shall continue to be exempt from the braking requirements imposed by the state of Louisiana, including more particularly but not exclusively those requirements set forth in this subpart, provided its gross weight does not exceed ten thousand pounds or the speed of such vehicle does not exceed thirty miles per hour. The provisions of this paragraph shall be applicable only to vehicles used exclusively in transporting farm produce, livestock, farm supplies and implements of husbandry.
