Tax assessors may own property in their jurisdiction, but must assess and report it; Louisiana Tax Commission members must file annual ownership reports.
§1979. Listing and assessment of certain property in which the assessor, a member of the Louisiana Tax Commission, or an immediate family member of either has an interest A. Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, a tax assessor and members of his immediate family as defined in R.S. 42:1102 may own property within the parish or district in the jurisdiction of the assessor. If a tax assessor or a member of his immediate family owns property within his jurisdiction, such assessor shall assess the property in accordance with all applicable provisions of law. For the purposes of this Section, "own" shall include a direct ownership, or ownership in part or through any legal entity. The tax assessor shall submit all such assessments to the Louisiana Tax Commission within thirty calendar days after the filing of the assessor's assessment roll with the Louisiana Tax Commission and the commission shall review those assessments for compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations. B. The members of the Louisiana Tax Commission shall file the same report required in R.S. 47:1979(A) and shall list the ownership of all property within the state owned by him or a member of his immediate family as defined in R.S. 42:1102 along with the assessment of such property shown on the appropriate assessment roll. The report shall be filed with the president of the Senate, the speaker of the House of Representatives and the Legislative Audit Advisory Council no later than December fifteenth of each calendar year.
