Missouri Revised Statutes § 57.080 - Vacancy in office, how filled — private person may execute process, when

If the sheriff’s office becomes vacant, the county commission fills it, and in some cases must call a special election. During the vacancy, certain court process may be served by a person chosen by the plaintiff, with the clerk required to endorse that authority.
