UT El Paso may charge a recreational facility fee, but there are limits on the amount and on fee increases.
Sec. 54.541. RECREATIONAL FACILITY FEE; THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO. (a) The board of regents of The University of Texas System may charge each student enrolled at The University of Texas at El Paso a recreational facility fee. The fee may be used only for financing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and improving new and existing recreational sports facilities and programs at The University of Texas at El Paso. (a-1) A fee imposed under this section may not exceed: (1) $70 per student for a term or semester of 10 weeks or longer; or (2) $50 per student for any other term or semester. (a-2) Expired. (b) The board of regents is authorized to pledge the fees levied under this section for the payment of obligations issued for authorized purposes pursuant to the revenue financing system of The University of Texas System. (c) The recreational facility fee may not be increased unless the amount of the increase is approved by a majority vote of those students participating in a general student election called at The University of Texas at El Paso for that purpose. (d) The University of Texas at El Paso shall collect the recreational facility fee and deposit the money collected in an account to be known as The University of Texas at El Paso recreational facility account. (e) The recreational facility fee is not counted in determining the maximum amount of student services fees which may be charged under Section 54.503 of this code, as amended.
