About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: the Fisheries Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act. Fishing with poison, poisonous plants, explosives, or electrical fishing devices is prohibited unless the Director gives written permission. The Minister may make an order to prohibit a fishing method, or require conditions on its use, if the Minister considers the method likely to be unduly destructive. No person may introduce certain non-native fish into water or import live fish into the Republic without the Director’s written permission.
