Purpose and legislative effect
“This section gives the Act its short title and lets the Minister set the commencement date by statutory instrument.”
This section gives the Act its short title and lets the Minister set the commencement date by statutory instrument. Section 2 updates the Act’s definitions for authorised investment, Bank of Zambia, licence, and Registrar. This section changes the rules for building societies by requiring capital and deposit/loan amounts to meet Bank of Zambia-prescribed levels, to keep certain funds as fixed-term investments for at least five years, to obtain a licence, and to be supervised by the Bank of Zambia. This provision says section 4 of the principal Act is repealed and replaced with new text. The Bank of Zambia may suspend registration of new building societies if it considers it in the public interest, and it may direct the Registrar to refuse registration of a proposed new society.
