Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: Disaster Management Act, 2010. This section defines terms used in the Act, including disaster, hazard, emergency, relief, mitigation, resilience, vulnerability, and the names of several committees and officers. This Act does not apply to an occurrence or event if an emergency is declared under the Emergency Powers Act, or if another law can deal with it effectively. This provision creates the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit and makes it responsible for implementing the Act’s provisions. The Unit must serve as the Secretariat for the national disaster management structure and carry out disaster management functions.
