The trial magistrate misdirected himself by sentencing the appellant under the mistaken belief that there was a statutory minimum and maximum sentence for the offence of stock theft, when in fact the law had been amended to remove such requirements. The offence was committed after the amendment came into force, and the appellant should have been sentenced under the amended law, which only prescribes a maximum sentence of fourteen years.
