At the material time, the law did not require an employer to provide reasons or a hearing before terminating an employment contract unless the contract expressly provided for such procedures. The Claimant's contract allowed for termination with one month's notice or pay in lieu thereof, and the Respondent complied by offering one month's salary in lieu of notice. The rules of natural justice and the concept of unfair dismissal were not applicable under the statutory and contractual framework then in force.
