On the issue of substantial loss, the court determined that the respondent, being a police corporal with a steady income, was not a 'man of straw' and would be able to refund the decretal sum if the appeal succeeded. However, to balance the interests of both parties and to avoid rendering the appeal nugatory, the court found it appropriate to grant a conditional stay of execution.
