The court found that the plea was unequivocal, taken in a language the appellant understood with the assistance of an interpreter, and that the procedure for plea taking was properly followed. However, the trial magistrate erred in imposing a default sentence of two years' imprisonment for non-payment of the fine, as the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act does not specify a default sentence. The correct approach, as per section 28(2) of the Penal Code, is to apply the statutory scale, which would result in a default sentence of 12 months' imprisonment for each count.
