Procedural Posture

Criminal Case / Judgment

  1. 1 Whether the accused murdered the deceased as charged.
  2. 2 Whether the accused was of sound mind at the time of the alleged offence.
  3. 3 Whether the prosecution proved the accused's mental capacity at the material time beyond reasonable doubt.

Ratio Decidendi

The court found that although the accused admitted to the acts leading to the deceased's death, there was no evidence establishing his mental sanity at the time of the incident. The repeated psychiatric evaluations and the accused's own statement that he was sick at the material time raised sufficient doubt as to his mental capacity. Since the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was sane when the offence occurred, the presumption of sanity was rebutted. The court therefore acquitted the accused on the basis that his mental state at the time of the offence was not established, and ordered his immediate release as he was currently fit and treated.
