The court found that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused, Michael Ngugi Riungu, unlawfully caused the death of the deceased by decapitation, as established by direct eyewitness testimony and medical evidence. The accused's defence was a mere denial and was rejected in light of overwhelming evidence. However, a psychiatric assessment established that the accused suffered from a mental illness, most probably schizophrenia with drug-induced psychosis, at the time of the offence.
