The trial court imposed sentences of one year imprisonment on each count, to run consecutively, for offences under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act. However, the law prescribes a minimum of two years for conveying hunting apparatus and three years for hunting for bush meat trade. The sentences imposed were therefore unlawful and improper as they were below the statutory minimum. The High Court set aside the original sentences and substituted them with the minimum sentences as required by law.
