Detention in an addiction treatment centre is not inappropriate in principle but should be confined to rare cases with no violence, no weapon, no accomplice and clear proof of genuine desire for cure; where those conditions are not met or public protection is at risk (including risk to other centre inmates), conventional custodial sentences are required. Applying that test, the three treatment-centre orders were replaced by 18 months' imprisonment backdated to include time already spent in the centre.
