The Court held that where evidence central to a presumption is unreliable and closely connected to other disbelieved evidence, convictions based on that presumption are unsafe; judges should direct juries that rebuttal of statutory presumptions requires proof on the balance of probabilities, and failure to put a defendant's case adequately can render a verdict unsafe. Applying these principles the Court allowed the appeals, quashed the convictions and set aside sentences, but directed retrial of the 6th and 7th defendants on Counts 6 and 7.
