Leave to appeal was granted on all grounds because the Court of Appeal identified real and substantial concerns about the voluntariness and consequences of the applicant's prior guilty plea, the nature and conduct of his legal representation, the admission and potential misuse of prejudicial defence materials (the 'Long Story' and counsel's letter), and the overall weakness of the prosecution case, such that full appellate scrutiny including production of reversal‑of‑plea materials was necessary.
