The Court held that (1) the grievous bodily harm rule is settled common law and not unconstitutional; and (2) mandatory life imprisonment for murder does not amount to arbitrary, cruel or inhuman/degrading punishment or violate rights to review or to challenge detention, having regard to the offence's unique gravity, legitimate sentencing objectives, legislative history and the statutory review mechanism (Long-term Prison Sentences Review Board).
